Are we a nation of egorich people?
Norway is a rich country through our enormous oil production and exportation of oil product. We are indeed rich as a nation, but that’s going to be all we are if we don’t start putting our money to work in a constructive way.
There are quite a few wealthy shipowners and leaders within industry and trade in this country and internationally. They are all looking for projects to make good profits on their investments. Norway could take a leading role by setting up an international consortium of companies in order to organize construction projects in countries in need of developmen. This is big business, attracting companies and even nations world wide - also nations with a political agenda for their investments. These resourceful companies and investors should be invited to tame part in such a conglomerate of companies. Our oil fund would make good profits by investing directly into such companies. We should get rid of the notion that all official investments must be done over our national budget. Norway is already known as an important investor in companies all over the world through buying shares in various companies, also some we should keep away from.
Norway would be able to secure democratic values for such activities and make sure that everything is done to avoid corruption. Our generation is fortunate to have such opportunities, but we seem to forget that with great wealth comes even greater responsibilities. The income from oil is a national benefit, but oi, as a commodity, is indeed international and of tremendous importance to all people - now and in the foreseeable future.
Creating work opportunities in countries will remove the need for going to other countries to find work. And we know how beneficial labor is for a nation and the national budgets. We should give helpful help instead of just pouring out money.
